The Definitive (And Completely Unofficial) Guide to Aggressive Mediocrity

Below you'll find our ranked collection of mid-tier masterpieces. None of these are the best. That's the point. The best slots are full of people who never learned to enjoy the middle.

The Definitive (And Completely Unofficial) Guide to Aggressive Mediocrity

Welcome. If you clicked here, you were probably looking for something exceptional and settled for this instead. We respect the instinct. Mid-Tier Mayhem is home to original commentary about the beautifully average things we all pretend not to notice.

To be mid is to be a warm cup of coffee in a meeting that could have been an email. It is the third cookie in the bag, neither the first (too eager) nor the last (too greedy). It is the perfectly acceptable answer on a test you studied for and immediately forgot. We do not rank to promote. We rank to celebrate the comfortable nowhere at the center of everything.

The Top Ten (In No Particular Order, Because We're Honest About That)

1. The IKEA Birkelund — A coffee table so unremarkable it makes you question every furniture choice that led you here. Assembles in four hours and looks exactly like every other coffee table. 7/10. Would assemble again out of pure resignation.

2. Office Printer, Model 'Whatever It Is' — The sole device in the building that requires a blood oath and three business days to print a single-page PDF. It has feelings. It does not like you. 6/10.

3. The Generic Brand Cereal — The store brand that is 94% identical to the name brand and 100% worse in a way you can only describe to yourself in the car. Crunchy. Sad. Real. 5.5/10.

4. The Hotel Room Keycard — Works for exactly one door, which is never the door you expect. Flick it. Works. Flicks it again tomorrow. Fails. A daily lesson in humility. 6/10.

5. The Self-Checkout 'Unexpected Item in Bagging Area' — Six words that have broken more adults than any breakup. You did the item. It wants more. You are a hostage to software now. 7/10.

6. The Generic 12-Pack Pen — One works. The rest are for other people who clearly plan ahead. You do not plan. You borrow. 5/10.

7. The Airport Lounge Chair — Slightly reclined, nowhere near enough, upholstered in a fabric that defies both comfort and cleanup. You will nap like a confused raccoon. 6.5/10.

8. The 'Loading...' Spinner That Loads Nothing — A circle. It turns. Your life passes it by. Somewhere a developer is proud. 4/10.

9. The Parking Garage Level 3 — Not the top (too close to freedom), not the bottom (too much commitment). Level 3, where the lights flicker and the spaces are measured by a ruler held by someone who gave up. 6/10.

10. The Generic Brand Paper Towels — The one sheet that dissolves on contact with grease, leaving you staring at a stain that was always going to be there. You are now a paper-towel cynic. 5/10.

Do not take it seriously. Take it very seriously. Carry it with you. Let it inform your life choices without actually changing any of them. This is the mid-life, and we are living it loudly and without ambition. Scroll down for our weekly Oddities — short, punchy takes on smaller mediocrities. And no, there is no Part 2. Part 2 would be trying. We've tried. It's mid.
